Tense

Toaq does not require tense to be overtly expressed. However, it has a family of temporal verbs, with which one can do so if needed:

naı	present tense (PRE)
pu	past tense (PST)
jıa	future tense (FUT)

Temporal verbs have scope over the verbal complex and the post-field.

	Nảı	tỉ	jí	Fáraqsegua.
	PRE	at	I	France
	"I am in France right now."

	Nảı	mủıdua	jí.
	PRE	understand	I
	"Now I understand."

	Pủ	jỉu	jí	tì	sa	ảomo.
	PST	born	I	P-at	some	island
	"I was born on an island."

	Pủ	pỉe	nháobo	fủ	baq	bỉra	rào	kíachaq.
	PST	drink	the-their	offspring	GEN	beer	P-when	the-Monday
	"Their kid drank beer on Monday."

	Jỉa	jỏaı	míy	súq	nha.
	FUT	search	we(1+3)	you	PRM
	"(I promise) we will look for you."

	Bủ	jỉa	fảq	háo.
	not	FUT	happen	the-stuff
	"The thing won’t happen."

Tense predicates can also be used as Type II adverbials using the tone:

	Fả	nháo	núokua	pũ.
	go	they	the-bedroom	ADV-PST
	"Go to the bedroom they did."

	Jảolaqtao	jí	súq	jĩa	nha.
	call.on.phone	I	you	ADV-FUT	PRM
	"Call you on the phone I will."
